Throughout history, everyone always talked about Montenegrins as tall, strong and fearless people. Our physical predispositions made us great warriors and gave us many battles that we had won against much bigger and stronger forces. That brings us to today's subject popular and successful sports in Montenegro.

Almost every child that is growing up in Montenegro trains or plays some sport. From individual sports such as tennis to group sports such as football or basketball. That physicality of Montenegrin people (that we already mentioned made us good soldiers) made some of Europe's best sportsmen/women.

Montenegro is also one of the countries in the world that has a passion with regards to sports and as a matter of fact, team sports are some of the most popular spectator events in the country. Team sports in this country have their own way of uniting the people especially when they win different medals. The most popular sport that you can find in Montenegro is water polo. Water polo is very popular in Montenegro because this sport brings popularity, pride as well as medals for the country. Water polo brings pride to the country when they recently won a gold medal in the FINA Water Polo World League in the year 2009 and European Water Polo Championship in Spain in the year 2008.

There are also other sports that are gaining ground in Montenegro such as basketball, football and volleyball and their team brings a lot of medals especially when they were part of Yugoslavian National Basketball. The national team of Montenegro joined the International Basketball Federation or FIBA in 2006. The people of Montenegro are quite passionate, not only in team sports, but sports that also practice and require strength such as combat sports like boxing, judo and karate.
